We currently have three reading volunteers who work with Lower Key Stage 2. They play reading games and activities and share stories to help pupils experience fun, additional reading opportunities. www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk/
A shared book is used at quiet time (3pm-3:15pm) which the teacher reads to instil a love of reading. A specific author is focused upon each term.
Each class has a specific ‘star author’ each term. Visit our class pages to find out which author each class has chosen this term!

- Reading at Priory Fields -

At Priory Fields we encourage the love of reading and acquisition of knowledge whilst using a systematic and wide ranging approach to the mechanics of learning to read.

We instil in our children the need to read, for pleasure and to be successful in life.  Letters and Sounds is used as our phonic scheme and daily sessions support the acquisition of sounds, word building, blending and segmenting of words.   Children are introduced to the programme in Early Years and work systematically through it.  This programme is used throughout the school regardless of age as the acquisition of phonics is seen as an essential requirement for successful reading.  On successful competition of the programme, children are introduced to Support for Spelling to further enhance their literacy skills.

Right from the start, children are introduced to reading and are able to choose books  themselves from a levelled range within the banded system.  In Early Years and Key Stage 1, children are expected to read a sequence of books prior to choosing for themselves.
