Big Idea

What on earth is happening beneath our feet? The tectonic plates that form the Earth’s crust are always moving. Even the smallest movement can cause huge earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis that devastate communities across wide areas. If we can understand what is happening underground, we can learn to predict and protect ourselves in the future. What can we learn from rocks? As stupendous scientists, we will compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties. This knowledge will help us to describe how fossils are formed. As hands-on historians, we will visit the Warren and collect fossils, like the esteemed fossil hunter Mary Anning. We will then use these artefacts to help us to describe and explain the passage of time. As amazing artists, we will develop our use of sketch books and consider how these can support us in refining our observational and sketching skills.

Integrity Learning Landing

We invited our parents in to showcase our extreme environments learning. We explained how fossils were formed, the different types of rocks, the layers of the Earth and how earthquakes occur. We also shared our topic learning in books and our printing from art.

All our parents were amazed with our learning this term.

Fossil Hunting at The Warren

Year 3 took a trip to The Warren in Folkestone to support their learning of extreme environments. We were palaeontologists for the day and searched for fossils. We had lots of fun and found a lot of interesting fossils.

Extreme Environments

As part of our Extreme Environments topic, we have looked at the layers of the Earth and created a representation of the different layers using playdough for each layer.

We then added the land to complete the Earth’s crust.

Extreme Environments

To begin our topic, ‘Extreme Environments’ we created our own fossils for our Learning Lift-Off. We learnt lots about how fossils are formed over millions and how fossils were once living creatures.

Maths

In number Maths, we have been learning how to partition 3-digit numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. We have been found different ways to partition these numbers, discussing how the parts change but the whole is still the same.

Our topic Maths this term focuses on shape. So far, we have named and identified the properties of 2D using key vocabulary; sides and vertices. We have also learnt about right angles and went on a hunt for right angles around the school.
