Term 3

The Big Idea

This term we become expert physicists! Forces are pushing and pulling at everything in our Universe. Even as we sit in our classroom, the walls and the ceiling are pushing and pulling at each other, while gravity and friction hold us in our seats. How has Science inspired Art?This term we study a range of artists who have been inspired by Science, we look to Science to inspire our own masterpieces and consider the importance of ‘inspiration’. In DT we will apply our knowledge of magnets to design, create and evaluate a game.

Learning Landing

For our learning landing, we held a ‘Magic Magnets’ show to year 1. We showed them all our learning about magnets forces. There were four stations set up for the children to explore.

Station 1: Magnetic games – the year 1 got a chance to play some of our magnetic games. These consisted of fishing games, racing games and maze games.

Station 2: We had magnetic paint, where the children had to use magnets to move the paint around the paper.

Station 3: Sorting objects into magnetic and non-magnetic objects.

Station 4: Blow painting, where the children had to use the push force to move the paint around the paper.

‘They easily stick as magnets are magnetic.’

‘I had fun blowing the paint.’

‘We painted with magnets by moving it around. One on top and one on the bottom.’

‘I played the magnetic game when you fish and you swing it and then the magnet connects to the fish.’

PE

During PE, Integrity class have been exploring different apparatus and how we can travel across them and then incorporate them into a routine.

We explored benches and spent time thinking about different ways of travelling across them using different body parts.

Then we looked at including a support or balance into the sequence before thinking about a way we can jump off the bench, making sure we land safely.

We were set a challenge to try and score 5 points by having each component of the sequence included in our routine.

Topic

As part of our topic, we have learnt about magnets, exploring what is magnetic and what isn’t magnetic.

We then became scientists to complete an investigation to find out which magnet was strongest.

To do this, we needed to find out which magnet would attract the most paper clips. We had to keep adding paper clips until no more were attracted to the magnet.

We showed the values of adventurous aardvark and responsible raccoon throughout this investigation with some interesting results.

Maths

In Maths this term we are learning about multiplication and division.

So far this term we have learnt about arrays, making them using counters to help us solve multiplication questions.

Topic

As part of our curriculum learning we have explored different forces. We looked at the push and pull force and learnt how we could tell the difference between the different forces.

Learning Lift-off

To kick start our topic forces, we took part in a circuit of activities. We had a variety of activities linked to throwing and catching, jumping and running. We then discussed how we needed to use different forces to complete these activities.
