Term 3

Home Sweet Home

Home is where the heart is! Are all homes the same? And who lives where? This term we explore the idea of what a ‘home’ means. All homes are different. Our homes are in the United Kingdom, which is made up of four countries – what can we learn about these countries to help us better understand where we live? Are homes made up of bricks or families? We think about the difference between a ‘home’ and a ‘house’. We will explore materials used to make houses but also what it is that makes home feel special to us.

Children's Mental Health Week

This week is Children’s Mental Health week and in year 1 we have been thinking about what makes us happy. We like playing games, colouring, playing Playdoh, building Lego and being helpful. We have also been doing some yoga and some rainbow mindfulness breathing exercises.

“I am making pizza.”

“I am making cakes.”

“We are sharpening the pencils.”

“I am building the best house!”

Learning Lift Off

What a great start to the new year!

In our learning lift off we built houses using different materials, some used card and plastic, many chose to use Lego bricks!

We have also started looking at materials, and what materials would be good to build a house with. We are looking at the properties of materials in Science, then we will be creating new and improved houses in DT and finally looking at how houses have changed in history.

English

In English we have been looking at the story of the Three Little Pigs, we have been using our skills of prediction to guess what might happen after the end of the story and we have been changing the characters and thinking of amazing adjectives to improve our writing.

Maths

In maths we have been learning about doubling and halving, we have been thinking about repeated addition and we have been looking at 3D shapes.

The children were very impressive with their knowledge of 3D shapes!
