Term 5
Building Neolithic Houses
Our DT this term has linked to our topic of the Stone Age. We needed to design our own Neolithic house, thinking about the resources we would use, making links to what they would have used back in the Stone Age.
Once we designed our houses, we then worked as collaborative cats to construct our Neolithic house using clay, sticks and grass. We all enjoyed going out into the forest school area to complete this activity. Some of us decided we needed glue and used some sticks to help stick things down. Others realised that the sticks needed to be a certain length and a similar length to ensure the walls and roof was stable.
Stone Age Cave Painting
We became real Stone Age people. We got the chance to experience how Stone Age people painted in caves. First, we needed to find a stick that could act as a paintbrush. Then we needed to find grass to make the brush part of our paintbrush. Afterwards, we worked in our tribes to create a paint mixture by crushing mud or charcoal and mixing it with water to create a paste. Finally, we painted the container by using our hand-made paintbrushes or by using our hands.
Creative Curriculum
As part of our creative curriculum lessons, we were able to look at a variety of Stone Age artefacts, thinking about what they might have been.
After some discussions we decided that some of them were most likely flint, Stone Age tools or arrowheads. We decided this based on the shape and size of the artefacts.
English
As part of our English lessons, we have written and published our own adventure stories based on The Stone Age boy. After we published our stories, we were able to go down and read our stories to year 1.
Computing
This term in computing, we are learning all about the programme scratch.
So far, we have learnt how to change our background, sprite, how to make our character move right, left, up and down. We then learnt how to add a sound and make our character smaller and bigger.
Stone Age Tools
In creative curriculum this term, we are learning all about the Stone Age. So far we have learnt about the Paleolithic period, Mesolithic period and Neolithic period. We then imagined we were Stone Age people who needed to create their own tools using the knapping technique.
‘It was really difficult.’
‘I found it very hard to make it the correct shape.’
‘The pieces kept falling off when they shouldn’t have.’
‘I’m glad I didn’t live in the Stone Age.’
